In Singapore, where every square meter of living space is precious, the standard one-size-fits-all approach to furniture often falls short. Homeowners in HDB flats and condominiums frequently grapple with irregular layouts, awkward corners, and a persistent need for more effective storage. This is where the power of bespoke design becomes not just a luxury, but a necessity for a functional and harmonious home. A well-executed custom furniture case study Singapore project can transform a cramped and cluttered apartment into a spacious, organized, and aesthetically pleasing sanctuary.
This article delves into a real-world project undertaken by MRETTY, showcasing how a typical 4-room HDB flat was reimagined to meet the specific needs of a growing family. We will explore the initial challenges, the collaborative design process, the innovative solutions implemented in each room, and the final, transformative outcome. This case study illustrates how custom-built systems are a strategic investment in quality of life, offering unparalleled space optimization, personalized style, and long-term value that off-the-shelf furniture simply cannot match.
The Tan Family's Custom Furniture Journey
The Clients: The Tan Family and Their Vision
Our clients were the Tan family—a professional couple with two young children. They had recently purchased a resale 4-room HDB flat in a mature estate. While the location was ideal, the apartment's layout and existing fixtures were dated and poorly suited to the dynamic needs of a modern family. Mrs. Tan, a graphic designer, had a strong vision for a clean, minimalist aesthetic, while Mr. Tan, an engineer, prioritized durability, functionality, and clever storage solutions.
Core Challenges with Their HDB Flat
The family presented us with a clear set of problems that needed to be solved:
Insufficient & Inefficient Storage: The existing built-in wardrobes were shallow and lacked logical organization. The kitchen had limited cabinet space, leading to countertop clutter. The entryway was a chaotic pile of shoes and bags with no designated storage.
Wasted Space & Awkward Layouts: A recessed wall in the living room and an oddly shaped corner in the master bedroom were underutilized "dead zones." Standard furniture would either not fit or would fail to use the space effectively.
Lack of Aesthetic Cohesion: The apartment was a patchwork of different styles and finishes from previous owners. The Tans desired a unified, seamless look that would flow through the entire home, creating a sense of calm and order.
Health & Safety Concerns: With two young children, the Tans were deeply concerned about the materials used in their home. They insisted on solutions with low formaldehyde emissions (E0 Grade) and features like soft-closing mechanisms to prevent injuries.
MRETTY's Whole-House Customization Solution
Instead of addressing each room in isolation, our design team proposed a holistic, whole-house customization strategy. This approach ensures that every element, from the entryway shoe cabinet to the master bedroom wardrobe, shares a common design language and material palette, creating the unified aesthetic the family craved.
Material & Design Palette Selection
After a detailed consultation, we established a core palette that balanced beauty, durability, and health:
Core Material: High-grade, moisture-resistant plywood was chosen for all cabinetry carcasses, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms, to ensure stability and longevity in Singapore's humid climate.
Finishes: A combination of matte white laminates for a bright, airy feel, complemented by light oak wood veneer accents to add warmth and texture. This two-tone approach created visual interest without sacrificing the minimalist vision.
Health Standard: All panels and materials used were certified Super E0 grade, ensuring the lowest possible formaldehyde emissions for a healthy indoor environment.
Room-by-Room Transformation Highlights
1. Entryway (Genkan) Transformation
The narrow corridor with no storage previously resulted in a permanent pile of shoes and school bags. To solve this, we designed a full-height, slim-profile entryway cabinet, only 35cm deep, ensuring it did not obstruct the walkway.
Shoe Storage: Ventilated, tilted shelves were installed in the lower section, capable of holding over 20 pairs of shoes neatly out of sight.
Miscellaneous Storage: The upper cabinets were designated for items like umbrellas, keys, and reusable shopping bags.
Integrated Seating: A small, cushioned bench was built into the cabinet, providing a convenient spot to sit while putting on shoes.
The entryway was transformed from a cluttered bottleneck into a functional and welcoming transition zone.
2. Living Room Renovation
The living room's large, recessed wall made the room feel imbalanced and was too shallow for a standard TV console. We addressed this by designing a custom media wall and feature panel system.
Feature Wall: The recessed area was clad in the light oak wood veneer, turning an awkward space into a deliberate design feature.
Floating Console: A sleek, wall-mounted console in matte white was built to the exact width of the recess. This floating design created an illusion of space and made the floor easy to clean. It housed all media devices, with custom cut-outs at the back for invisible cable management.
Concealed Storage: Flanking the media wall, we installed full-height, handle-less cabinets with a push-to-open mechanism, providing massive amounts of storage for books, toys, and household items, all hidden behind a seamless white facade.
The living room now feels balanced, spacious, and completely clutter-free. The feature wall serves as a sophisticated focal point.
3. Kitchen Optimization
Limited counter space and disorganized cabinets made meal preparation stressful in the original kitchen. Our solution was a complete custom kitchen system designed for maximum efficiency.
Optimized Cabinetry: We replaced the old cabinets with a new system featuring deep drawers for pots and pans, a dedicated pull-out pantry for dry goods, and an integrated cabinet for the rice cooker.
Island Counter: A small, multi-functional kitchen island was introduced. It provided extra food prep space, additional drawer storage, and a casual breakfast spot for the children.
Durable Finishes: The high-grade plywood core was finished with a durable, easy-to-clean high-pressure laminate, ensuring it could withstand the rigors of daily cooking.
The kitchen is now a highly functional, ergonomic workspace that the family enjoys using together. Countertops are clear, and every item has its place.
4. Master Bedroom Retreat
An awkward corner next to the window and a need for a "his and hers" wardrobe solution posed challenges in the master bedroom. We designed a wrap-around wardrobe and integrated dressing table to address these.
Corner Utilization: The awkward corner was transformed into a full-height L-shaped wardrobe, maximizing every inch of storage.
Internal Organization: The wardrobe interior was fully customized. "His" side featured more hanging space for shirts and trousers, while "hers" side included more shelving for folded items and bags, along with accessory drawers.
Integrated Vanity: A floating dressing table was seamlessly integrated into the wardrobe system, complete with a mirror and dedicated lighting, creating a personal grooming station for Mrs. Tan without taking up extra floor space.
The bedroom became a serene and organized retreat. The custom wardrobe provided more than double the original storage capacity, and the integrated vanity was a much-loved feature.

MRETTY Custom vs. Off-the-Shelf Furniture
This case study highlights the tangible differences between a bespoke solution from MRETTY and generic, ready-made furniture, especially concerning space utilization and overall value.
| Feature | Generic / Retail Furniture | MRETTY Custom System (Tan Family Case) |
| :------------------- | :--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Space Utilization | Standard sizes would have left gaps and failed to utilize the recessed wall or bedroom corner. | 100% Fit: Every cabinet was built to the exact millimeter, turning awkward spaces into functional storage. |
| Aesthetic Unity | The family would have to buy separate pieces from different stores, resulting in a mismatched look. | Unified Design: A consistent palette of matte white and light oak created a seamless, high-end feel throughout the home. |
| Material Quality | Often made from lower-grade MDF or particleboard, which swells in humidity and may have higher VOCs. | Superior Materials: E0 Super grade, moisture-resistant plywood was used, ensuring durability and a healthy indoor environment. |
| Functionality | Standard wardrobes lack personalized organization. Cable management is an afterthought. | Tailored to Lifestyle: Wardrobe interiors were designed for specific needs. Cable management was integrated invisibly. |
Customer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
We often receive questions regarding the applicability and benefits of custom furniture.
Q: I have a very small BTO flat. Is custom furniture worth the investment for a small space?
A: Absolutely. In fact, custom furniture provides the most value in small spaces. We can design multi-functional pieces, build storage into unused vertical spaces, and use clever designs like floating consoles and slim-profile cabinets to make your home feel larger and more organized than you thought possible.
Q: How do you ensure the final product matches my vision?
A: Our process is highly collaborative. It starts with an in-depth consultation, followed by detailed 3D renderings. These visuals allow you to see exactly how the furniture will look in your space. We only proceed to fabrication once you have reviewed and approved every detail, from the dimensions to the finish.
Q: What is the lead time for a whole-house custom project like this?
A: A comprehensive project typically aligns with your overall renovation schedule, usually taking 8-12 weeks from final design confirmation to installation. By planning early, we ensure that our production schedule complements your other renovation works, leading to a smooth and efficient process.
