The Vision
Mr. and Mrs. Lim acquired a charming but aged 3-room resale flat in the heritage district of Tiong Bahru. They loved the location but felt suffocated by the enclosed, dark kitchen that was cut off from the living area. They desired a space that felt open, modern, yet respectful of the flat's history.
The MRETTY Approach
We identified that the wall separating the kitchen and living room was non-structural. We proposed removing it entirely to create an open-plan living sphere, integrating the kitchen seamlessly with the rest of the home.
The Design
Layout: We replaced the wall with a long, quartz-topped peninsula. This served three functions: a prep area, a dining bar, and a visual divider that defined the zones without blocking light.
Palette: To honor the heritage feel, we used a modern shaker-style cabinet door in a deep navy blue, paired with brass handles. This was balanced by white marble-look quartz surfaces and white subway tiles for the backsplash.
- Storage: We integrated a full wall of floor-to-ceiling cabinets on the opposite side, housing the fridge, built-in oven, and a hidden pantry. This kept the "wet" work area uncluttered.
The Result
The flat was transformed. Light from the kitchen window now flooded the living room. The Lims could host friends for dinner, cooking and chatting simultaneously. The kitchen became the centerpiece of their home—a stunning blend of old-world charm and modern functionality.
