When commissioning bespoke cabinetry, it is worth asking how material choices are documented. “Formaldehyde-free” is often used loosely; it may refer to an adhesive formulation, a board specification or simply a marketing description. It should not be treated as proof that the finished cabinet or room has zero emissions.

Build a specification you can check

Start by listing what will actually be installed: carcass boards, door panels, veneers or laminates, edge-banding, paint or lacquer, adhesives and sealants. For each important material, ask the supplier to name the manufacturer and product. A clear specification makes it easier to compare quotations and to spot a proposed substitution later.

If a grade or certification is mentioned, request the relevant current test report. Check whether the report covers the same product, which method was used, when it was issued and whether it addresses the board itself or a finished component. A certificate for one material should not be assumed to cover every item in a full-home project.

Consider use, not just emissions

Cabinets in a dry bedroom have different demands from cabinets next to a kitchen sink. Discuss expected moisture exposure, cleaning, load, hardware and ventilation. Edge detailing and installation quality matter, especially around openings and joints. Ask what care is needed to keep the specified materials performing as intended.

Claims that one material “eliminates” all off-gassing or permanently protects a family’s health go beyond what a normal product specification can establish. A more useful goal is to choose documented lower-emission materials where appropriate and manage the rest of the indoor environment sensibly.

Questions for a cabinetry supplier

  1. Which exact materials are included in the price?
  2. Are test reports available for the proposed boards and finishes?
  3. What is the agreed process if a material needs to be substituted?
  4. How will humid or frequently cleaned areas be detailed?
  5. What maintenance advice and written warranty terms apply?
